Hanson Opticians has accreditation from the NHS to offer a number of enhanced services some of which are listed below. These services are only provided by select opticians.

Ocular Hypertension Monitoring

The term ocular hypertension usually refers to any situation in which the pressure inside the eye, called intraocular pressure, is higher than normal. We all have eye pressure, as it keeps the eye healthy and helps to maintain the shape of the eye. Eye pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Normal eye pressure ranges from 10-21 mm Hg. Ocular hypertension is an eye pressure of greater than 21 mm Hg.

Patients with Ocular Hypertension require regular monitoring. Hospitals are now able to discharge patients into the community to be seen by accredited opticians if there is no sign of progression.. Hanson Opticians is proud to be able to offer this service locally.

Cataract Assessments & Referral

Cataracts are the most common cause of impaired vi
sion in the world. Inside the eye, behind the coloured part (the iris) and the pupil, is the lens. In a normal eye, this lens is clear. It helps focus light rays on to the back of the eye (the retina), which sends messages to the brain allowing us to see.

Cataracts develop when protein builds up in the lens of your eye, making it cloudy. This prevents light from passing clearly through the lens, causing some loss of vision. New lens cells form on the outside of the lens, and the older cells are compacted into the centre of the lens, forming the cataract.
Types of cataracts include:

• Age-related cataracts – these cataracts form because of ageing.
• Congenital cataracts- babies are sometimes born with cataracts as a result of an infection, injury, or poor development in the womb, or they may develop it during childhood.
• Secondary cataracts- these develop as a result of other medical conditions, like diabetes, or exposure to toxic substances, certain drugs (such as corticosteroids or diuretics), ultraviolet light, or radiation.
• Traumatic cataracts- these form after an injury to the eye.

Other things that can raise your risk of getting cataracts include cigarette smoke, air pollution, and heavy drinking.
When Cataract affect your vision, they are treatable with a simple routine operation.

Pre-school children eye test

Children rarely complain about their sight, but often show there may be a problem with their vision through their behaviour

This can include sitting too close to the TV, rubbing their eyes a lot, holding objects very close to their face, blinking a lot, or one eye turning either in or out.
If you think your child is experiencing any sort of sight problems, bring them in for a check-up as soon as possible.
All babies will have their eyes checked at birth and again at about six weeks of age by a GP or health visitor. Once your child’s vision has been checked, it’s important to continue with regular sight tests. Your child should have a check-up at least once a year, as problems can occur at any age. Even if none of the symptoms described above are displayed, there could still be an underlying eye condition.

Children’s eye tests can be performed in a variety of ways to establish whether the eye and sight is functioning as it should. If you’re concerned about your child’s vision, arrange an appointment with us today, we see children of any age. Many concerns can be resolved by us. Don’t worry about the costs, as all NHS sight tests are free of charge for children under the age of 16.

Children’s Post School Vision Screening

If a child fails their school vision screening, it is imperative they are seen by a qualified optometrist. We provide this service for children of any age.

Macular Degeneration monitoring

Macular degeneration is a progressive disorder. We can constantly monitor any changes to your macula with the use of additional equipment and assess on a regular basis whether or not changes are occurring and if an urgent referral is required.

Foreign Body removal

Small high speed projectiles may embed in the cornea, the front clear window of the eye. These will rust or inflame the eye and lead to pain and redness. Those who grind, weld or work with metal are the most susceptible to foreign bodies. In some circumstances, it is possible to have a projectile penetrate into the eye which is an emergency situation. It is important to have an optometrist examine your eye as soon as you suspect you may have foreign material in it. Optometrists are best equipped to examine the eye under high magnification, remove the offending particles and prescribe an antibiotic drop or ointment. In emergencies, we can refer you to a surgeon.
